Ingredients and Substitutions

Overhead shot of ingredients for Caprese Salad which include tomatoes, fresh basil, fresh mozzarella, olive oil, balsamic glaze, kosher salt, and pepper.
  • Ripe tomatoes - Use flavorful, juicy tomatoes such as vine-ripe or Roma for the best results. These are both the perfect size for presentation. Using fresh produce is always best. Your local farmer's market is a great place to find these gems.
  • Fresh mozzarella slices- Opt for high-quality, ball of fresh mozzarella for a creamy texture. If unavailable, bocconcini or burrata can be good alternatives.
  • Fresh basil leaves - Adds a fragrant, herbal flavor. If fresh basil isn't available, dried basil can be used, though it will be less intense.
  • Extra-virgin olive oil - Provides a rich, fruity flavor that enhances the salad. A mild-flavored olive oil or avocado oil can be used as a substitute.
  • Balsamic glaze (optional) - Adds a tangy sweetness. If you prefer, you can use balsamic vinegar or omit it altogether.
  • Salt and ground black pepper to taste - Essential for seasoning and enhancing flavors. Feel free to adjust the amount to suit your taste, or use a sprinkle of salt and freshly ground black pepper for better texture and flavor.

Step 4: Drizzle 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil over the salad and optionally add balsamic glaze.

Top Tips

Use Fresh Ingredients: For the best flavor, select fresh tomatoes, high-quality fresh mozzarella, and vibrant basil leaves.

Slice Evenly: Ensure tomatoes and mozzarella are sliced to a consistent thickness (¼-inch) for even layering and a pleasing presentation.

Season Generously: Don’t skimp on salt and pepper; they enhance the flavors of the salad.

Drizzle at the End: Add a drizzle of olive oil and balsamic glaze just before serving to keep the salad fresh and vibrant.

Serve at Room Temperature: Caprese salad tastes best when the ingredients are at room temperature, so let it sit out for a few minutes before serving.

Storage and Make Ahead

Storage: Store any leftover caprese salad in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Keep the salad separate from the dressing to prevent it from becoming soggy.

Make ahead: To make ahead, prepare the tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil ahead of time and layer them just before serving. Keep the olive oil and balsamic glaze separate until ready to serve. This will ensure the salad stays fresh and visually appealing.

FAQ

Can I use different types of tomatoes in this recipe?

Yes, you can! While the best tomatoes are ripe and round, heirloom tomatoes add a burst of color and flavor. Cherry or grape tomatoes work well for a bite-sized version of this classic Caprese salad recipe, making it even more versatile for any occasion.

What is the best mozzarella to use for Caprese Salad?

Fresh mozzarella is essential for an authentic Caprese Salad. Look for mozzarella balls labeled "fresh" or "buffalo mozzarella" for the creamiest texture. Avoid pre-shredded or low-moisture mozzarella, as they won’t deliver the same rich flavor.

Can I make Caprese Salad ahead of time?

This salad is best served fresh, but you can slice the tomatoes and mozzarella up to a day ahead and store them in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator. Assemble the simple salad just before serving to ensure the basil remains crisp and vibrant.

How can I enhance the flavor of this salad?

For an extra burst of flavor, drizzle a high-quality balsamic glaze over the salad or sprinkle it with flaky sea salt. You can also add a touch of freshly minced garlic or a few crushed red pepper flakes for a subtle kick.
