Nothing says fresh and flavorful quite like this Italian Tuna Salad, a Mediterranean-inspired dish that's as vibrant as it is satisfying. Made with tender tuna packed in olive oil, juicy cherry tomatoes, briny capers, and aromatic fresh herbs, this salad bursts with classic Italian flavors. The zesty dressing of lemon, red wine vinegar, and extra virgin olive oil tie it all together, making it a perfect choice for a quick lunch, light dinner, or even a crowd-pleasing appetizer. Ready in just 35 minutes, this healthy, protein-packed recipe is easy to prepare and sure to impress. It's a new take on classic tuna salad and one of my favorite lunches.

This "no mayo" tuna salad is great for summertime! It's light and refreshing! If you are looking for more "no mayo" salads, try our Italian Potato Salad and Italian Tomato Salad.

When I was a kid, my Italian grandma used to make the simplest tuna salad that was so good, it didn’t need anything fancy. She’d mix tuna with a drizzle of olive oil, a splash of red wine vinegar, and a little salt and pepper. That was it—but it was magic! I remember sitting at her kitchen table, loving every bite of that tangy, savory tuna. This recipe is my way of taking her classic and giving it a little upgrade with fresh herbs, juicy tomatoes, and briny capers. It’s still simple and full of flavor, just with a bit of a modern twist!

Ingredients and Substitutions

Overhead view of ingredients for Italian Tuna Salad. Ingredients include, tuna, basil leaves, Italian parsley, kosher salt, black pepper, capers, black olives, garlic powder, red onions, cherry tomatoes, and red wine vinegar.
  • Tuna (preferably packed in olive oil): Albacore tuna adds a protein-packed, savory base to the salad. When packed in olive oil, it is more tender and flavorful, enriching the dish with a luxurious, silky texture and taste. You can use tuna packed in water, but olive oil is preferred for this recipe.
  • Cherry tomatoes: Cherry tomatoes provide bursts of sweetness and vibrant color, balancing the savory elements of the salad while adding a juicy, fresh texture.
  • Red onion: Red onion introduces a sharp, tangy bite and a slight crunch, cutting through the richness of the tuna and olive oil for a well-rounded flavor.
  • Black olives: Black olives offer a briny, slightly salty flavor that enhances the Mediterranean essence of the dish while adding depth and complexity.
  • Capers: Capers bring a tangy, pickled flavor that pairs perfectly with the tuna and olives, amplifying the bright and savory notes of the salad.
  • Fresh Italian parsley: Fresh flat-leaf parsley provides a pop of herbaceous freshness, adding brightness and enhancing the overall flavor profile of the dish.
  • Fresh basil: Basil contributes an aromatic, slightly sweet herbal quality that complements the other Mediterranean ingredients beautifully.
  • Extra-virgin olive oil: Extra-virgin olive oil acts as the primary dressing base, delivering a fruity, rich flavor that ties the ingredients together and adds a luxurious mouthfeel.
  • Red wine vinegar: Red wine vinegar introduces a tangy, acidic element, balancing the richness of the olive oil and enhancing the freshness of the vegetables and herbs.
  • Juice of 1 lemon: Fresh lemon juice adds a zesty, citrusy brightness, complementing the tuna and capers while lifting the overall flavor profile.
  • Garlic powder: Garlic powder provides a subtle, savory undertone, enhancing the dish with a hint of depth and warmth without overpowering the other flavors.
  • Kosher salt: Kosher salt ensures the dish is perfectly seasoned, enhancing the natural flavors of each ingredient and bringing them together harmoniously.
  • Black pepper: Black pepper adds a touch of earthy heat, balancing the acidity and sweetness while contributing subtle spice to the overall flavor.

Step 4: Season with salt and pepper to taste. Toss the ingredients until well combined

Top Tips

Use High-Quality Tuna: Choose tuna packed in olive oil for richer flavor and better texture. If using water-packed tuna, consider adding a bit more olive oil to the mixture.

Fresh Herbs Make a Difference: Use fresh parsley and basil for the best flavor. Dried herbs can be used in a pinch, but the taste won’t be as vibrant.

Let It Chill: Don’t skip the refrigeration step. Allowing the salad to chill for at least 15 minutes enhances the flavors and improves the texture.

Adjust Seasoning Before Serving: Taste the salad just before serving and adjust the salt, pepper, and lemon juice as needed for perfect balance.

Serve with Crunchy Sides: Pair the salad with crusty bread, crackers, or fresh greens to add texture and make it a more filling dish.

Variations

Mediterranean - Add crumbled feta cheese, chopped cucumber, and a sprinkle of oregano for a classic Mediterranean twist.

Spicy - Mix in a pinch of red pepper flakes for a bit of heat. You can also drizzle with a spicy olive oil.

Deluxe - Top with roasted red peppers, sun-dried tomatoes, and toasted pine nuts for a more indulgent version.

Storage and Make Ahead

Storage: Store any leftover tuna salad in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Ensure the container is sealed well to keep the salad fresh and prevent it from absorbing other odors in the fridge.

Make Ahead: You can prepare the tuna salad up to a day in advance. Simply follow the recipe instructions and store the salad in the refrigerator. Allow it to chill and meld overnight, which can enhance the flavors. Remove from the fridge about 20 - 30 minutes ahead to bring back to room temperature and toss lightly before serving.
